In Tamil Nadu, southeastern India, is the Regal plantation owned by two brothers-in-law Karthikeyan Palasisamy and Harish Manoj Kumar and their wives. The Kumar family has been growing cocoa for over a decade and in 2015, they started making chocolate from their own cocoa beans.
Soklet is Regal's chocolate brand and is known as India's first and only tree-to-bar chocolate. The plantation is located at the foot of the Anamalai hills, near the Indira Gandhi Nature Reserve.
Soklet cocoa is grown as an undercropping on a plantation where coconut, nutmeg, pepper and banana are also grown. This creates a mix of interdependent fauna that contributes to the flavour nuances of the cocoa beans. This principle of cultivation is the cornerstone of permaculture. The plantation is pesticide-free and managed according to the principles of aquaculture and permaculture, giving the trees the best nutrition to produce great-tasting cocoa! Each year, the best trees on the plantation are selected, to continue cultivating with them to meet the Regal plantation's growing demand for cocoa beans.
Single estate cocoa allows better control over the quality of cocoa beans. Because the source is known, farmers and producers can implement specific agronomic practices and follow careful harvesting and fermentation processes to ensure quality. This often results in higher-quality cocoa with less variability.
