I have been lucky enough to participate in many different kinds of cocoa ceremonies. These ceremonies were organised in various ways, where we drank ceremonial cocoa sourced from areas where cocoa occurs and grows naturally.
There are many ways to have your own cocoa ceremony, and all styles and tastes are welcome. I would like to share some suggestions for organising your own cocoa ceremony.

What is a cocoa ceremony?
Contrary to popular belief, cocoa ceremonies did not exist in Mesoamerica. However, cocoa was considered a sacred food and played an important role in many rituals, community events and religious ceremonies. In doing so, there were no stimulants such as alcohol or tobacco at that time. Cocoa was associated with devotional rites to many deities and was included in the preparation of sacred beverages, along with other revered ingredients such as corn and spices. Despite the great value placed on cocoa, the Olmecs, Mayans and Aztecs did not create ceremonies with the aim of celebrating cocoa alone.
The concept of a cocoa-centred ceremony is thus a more recent development. As a counterpoint to our fast-paced society, cocoa ceremony offers a valuable moment of calm and self-care. We combine the powerful properties of ceremonial cocoa with rituals focused on introspection, meditation and emotional discovery.
Preparing your own cocoa ceremony
After this history, here is an example we are going to give you an answer to the question "How do you organise your own cocoa ceremony?".
Step 1. Create a nice place
Start by creating a comfortable space. Set out a warm blanket and maybe some cushions. You can also add elements such as a candle, incense, a beautiful stone or any other object that is meaningful to you.
Step 2. Prepare the ceremonial cocoa
- Use 100% ceremonial cocoa, preferably from Peru, such as the 100% cuncho from Cusco by Original Beans Whether the 100% Keshet ceremonial cocoa from Pangoa, Peru.
- Heat about 200 ml of water or vegetable milk.
- Crush the cocoa and weigh out 20-25g for 200ml of liquid.
- Dissolve the cocoa in the warm liquid and stir with a whisk if necessary.
- Season the cocoa as desired with, for example, black pepper, cayenne pepper or cinnamon.

Close your eyes and visualise the journey of the cocoa: from the flowering cocoa tree to the fruit and the careful processing of the cocoa beans. Thank yourself for this moment of self-care. You may want to meditate or enjoy quiet music.
Step 4. Let the magic happen
The effects of cocoa can be different for everyone. Have no fixed expectations and enjoy the moment. Let the cocoa do its magic on your body and mind. Maybe you feel the need to be creative or just relax. Make sure you drink enough water afterwards and take time to enjoy after.
